Meeting with OVAESkillsUSA was recently joined by some of the nation’s top education leaders during a March 2 meeting at the U.S. Department of Education Office of Vocational and Adult Education (OVAE). Deputy Assistant Secretary for OVAE, Glenn Cummings, also joined the meeting to learn of SkillsUSA’s work with technical assessments and supporting youth in vulnerable communities. Dr. Sharon Miller, Director of the Division of Academic and Technical Education, opened the meeting by congratulating the group on their progress and providing insight into upcoming programs. One such program is Race to the Top, which will encourage technical skill assessments through a program of study. The Technical Advisory Committee has guided SkillsUSA through the development and launch of assessments and enabled stronger partnerships with industry and education leaders. Also during this meeting, the group discussed how to ensure that companies hiring Skill Connect participants understood the meaning behind the certificates and assessments. Additionally, the committee heard a detailed report about the positive difference SkillsUSA has made in six vulnerable communities nationwide, which were funded by the same grant that supported assessment development. The assessments are professionally designed and work flawlessly." -Tom CarrigOhio Hi-Point Career Center
